Environmentalists File Freedom of Information
Act with
NY State to Obtain Broadwater Documents
CCE Representatives Set to Meet with the Governor for
Monday, Feb 11, 2008 in Albany
Albany, NY— Today, Citizens
Campaign for the Environment (CCE) officially filed a Freedom of Information
Act (FOIA) request with New
York State agencies
on all information and correspondence regarding the Broadwater proposal.
“We
want to level the playing field and shine light on the real facts so
the public knows the truth. The
public deserves the truth and unfortunately when it comes to multi-national,
multi-billion dollar corporations, transparency is a foreign concept,” stated
Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director, Citizens Campaign for the Environment. rit
New York State is expected to issue their consistency
ruling under the Coastal Zone Management Act, on the Broadwater proposal
on February 12, 2008. Three weeks ago, Shell CEO, John Hofmeister and
Governor Spitzer had a closed-door meeting that was kept quiet until
inquiries were made by the press. As
a result of that meeting, Broadwater launched
a million dollar public relations campaign in New
York and Connecticut. CCE
has learned that Broadwater is in secret negotiations with NYS to delay
the ruling for several months past the Feb 12th deadline.
The FOIA request will expose any secrets documents and correspondence.
“What
began as a fight to save the Long Island Sound has grown into a fight
to save democracy. A true
democracy is where the people have a voice and can still influence
government. The fantasy of democracy is where Big
Oil’s power, money and influence become more influential than
the collective will of the public,” stated Adrienne Esposito, “If
we lose this battle, we lose our precious Long Island Sound and we lose
hope in a system where the public can make a difference—that’s
a lot to lose.”
“Environmental groups,
civic groups, homeowners, lobstermen and fishermen, and nearly every
single local, regional and state politician have vehemently opposed
this reckless proposal to privatize a section of Long Island Sound. Residents
are hopeful that Governor Spitzer has heard their voices and will stand
up for the public’s interests, not big oil’s money. The FOIA request will reveal any last
minute tricks that Shell Oil has up their sleeves,” said William
Cooke, CCE’s Government Liaison Director.
“Shell
and Trans Canada are using their money, power and influence to push New York State into ignoring the public and acting
as an agent for Shell. We truly hope they're unsuccessful. We hope the people’s Governor will
continue to stand up for the people of New
York,” concluded Esposito.
CCE
is scheduled to meet with the Governor in Albany on Monday, February 11, 2008 to discuss
Broadwater.
